Our DeCal Course
The Public Health Advocate is an undergraduate public health publication located at the University of California, Berkeley. We are dedicated to educating the public about current public health topics, and we provide students an opportunity to publish their work in our print issue or our online platform.
The Public Health Advocate’s DeCal course provides a structured, yet individualized, approach to helping students communicate public health research effectively. With weekly meetings focused on helping you hone your writing skills and occasional guest lectures from public health professionals, our DeCal is here to introduce students to public health research, journalism, and communication.
All enrolled students in our DeCal are writers. Writers in our DeCal are responsible for publishing two articles — either online or in print — the entire semester about public health topics of their choosing. These articles should be well-researched, incorporating academic sources and interviews.
Writers are expected to attend class every week. Class will be held every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. PST.
The Public Health Advocate is more than just a publication. It’s also an organization that brings together a diverse set of students united by a singular goal of educating the general public about health issues. To this end, we aim to hold small events and activities throughout the semester in an effort to know each other better. These events will be planned for and communicated to you by your DeCal facilitators.
Applications are due by Friday, January 29th, at 11:59 p.m. PST.
