Thank you for your interest in applying to The Public Health Advocate’s editorial board for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Please look through the following information before proceeding to the application portion. To ensure we receive your application, prepare the requested documents ahead of time.

Our Editorial Board

The Public Health Advocate is an undergraduate public health publication located at the University of California, Berkeley. We are dedicated to educating the public about current public health topics, and we provide students an opportunity to publish their work in our print issue or our online platform.

The Public Health Advocate’s editorial board is composed of: the editor in chief, print managing editors, online managing editor, DeCal managers, external relations manager, and multimedia manager. The editorial board meets every week, usually the hour after our Tuesday DeCal classes, to address issues and provide updates.

Available Editorial Board Positions

Open editorial board positions for the 2022-2023 academic year include the following:

  • (2) Print Managing Editors
  • (2) DeCal Managers
  • External Relations Manager
  • Multimedia Manager

Print Managing Editors

The print managing editors are responsible for organizing publication logistics for our two semesterly print issues. The print managing editors work closely with students, providing input during the writing and editing process as needed. Final drafts submitted by contributing writers are edited by the print managing editors one last time before print or online publication.

At least one managing editor must be present for DeCal and extracurricular meetings.

DeCal Managers

The DeCal managers are responsible for keeping track of DeCal attendance, activities, and assignments. As such, some of the DeCal managers’ responsibilities include being the editorial board’s liaison with our DeCal faculty advisor, keeping track of student attendance, and supervising assignment submissions.

The DeCal managers are expected to attend all DeCal meetings.

External Relations Manager

The external relations manager is responsible for maintaining PHA’s relationships with outside organizations and supporting our outreach efforts. Continuing a professional relationship with UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health is a priority, as is increasing our visibility within the ASUC and the campus communities. The external relations manager would be expected to supervise projects like organizing fundraising events, researching publicity opportunities, and applying for additional revenue streams.

The external relations manager is expected to attend all DeCal meetings.

Multimedia Manager

The multimedia manager’s general responsibilities include maintaining, updating, and developing additional curriculum on integrating multimedia (video/audio/data journalism and other evolving medias) with reporting by creating how-to videos and/or presentations; and serving as editor for projects such as PHA’s podcast, which can serve as a platform allowing student reporters to gain hands-on experience in scripting and producing audio stories. These responsibilities are flexible, as the manager can pitch and execute ideas for other projects (or choose to mainly focus on one project over another) and collaborate with other executive board members to help execute and promote projects like the podcast (i.e. the External Relations manager). The manager is expected to draft a rough plan of how often they will create or improve curricula or edit and/or produce audio pieces throughout the semester (i.e. creating a full slidedeck or recording a video tutorial every week or every other week). As with all other executive board positions, the multimedia manager is expected to attend the weekly editorial board meetings, and if the manager is editing students’ audio pieces, the manager is expected to meet individually with each student reporter during DeCal meetings, extracurricular meetings or on their own time outside of class.

The Multimedia Manager is expected to attend all DeCal meetings.
