Spring 2023 | Extracurricular Application

Introduction

Thank you for your interest in applying to The Public Health Advocate for the Spring 2023 semester!

You are currently accessing the application for joining PHA as an extracurricular. If you have not yet taken our DeCal or do not have prior experience writing or editing, please access the DeCal application.

Our Extracurricular Program

The Public Health Advocate is an undergraduate public health publication located at the University of California, Berkeley. We are dedicated to educating the public about current public health topics, and we provide students an opportunity to publish their work in our print issue or our online platform.

Our extracurricular program enables experienced students to start or continue their public health research with a greater level of independence. With weekly meetings focused on giving writers time to discuss their articles with copy editors, our extracurricular program allows students to build on their existing knowledge of research, journalism, and communication.

Available Staff Positions

Students interested in joining our extracurricular program may elect to be writers or copy editors.

Writers

Writers in our extracurricular program are responsible for publishing two articles — either online or in print — each semester about a public health topic of their choosing. These articles should be well-researched, incorporating academic sources and interviews.

Writers are expected to attend meetings every week with their teams. The purpose of these weekly meetings is to ensure writers have an opportunity to receive feedback from their team members. These meetings will be held every Thursday from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. PST.

Copy Editors

Copy editors are responsible for leading a team of writers from the extracurricular program. While copy editors are not required to publish articles, they ensure that articles are free from grammatical or stylistic errors. Additionally, copy editors supervise draft deadlines, provide input and feedback to writers, and work with the Editorial Board to discuss draft progress.

All copy editors are expected to meet with the editors-in-chief on a regular basis. In addition, copy editors are responsible for attending team meetings during either the extracurricular meeting times. Thus, copy editors leading extracurricular teams are expected to attend extracurricular meetings every week.

Our Culture

The Public Health Advocate is more than just a publication. It’s also an organization that brings together a diverse set of students united by a singular goal of educating the general public about health issues. To this end, we aim to hold small events and activities throughout the semester in an effort to know each other better. These events will be planned for and communicated to you by the editorial board.

Application Deadline

Applications are due by Friday, January 27, at 11:59 p.m. PST.
