Ways to Get Involved

Students interested in joining our publication have the option of enrolling in our two-unit DeCal, Advocates for Public Health, or joining our club.

DeCal Program

Our DeCal is specifically designed for students new to The Public Health Advocate. Facilitated by PHA’s editorial board, this course will focus on guiding students through the writing, editing, and publication process to equip students with the knowledge and expertise necessary to communicate health topics effectively. Students will have the opportunity to hear from public health professionals about their experiences in the field, learn about how public health can inform journalism, and work with other individuals passionate about educating and informing our communities about public health issues. Classes are every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. PST.

Extracurricular Program

Returning PHA writers and editors or students with previous publication experience are encouraged to join PHA as an extracurricular activity. All writers and copy editors participating in our publication have the same workload and general draft deadlines, but extracurricular students only meet for 30 minutes every week with their editor-writer teams. Meetings are every Thursday from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. PST.
